Unlearning the Myths that Bind Us

This Article explains the negative effect of children's cartoons, movies, tv shows, etc. Children are very innocent and easily swayed. Watching these toxic cartoons and movies has a lasting effect on children. Children might inspire to be a princess and think that they need to look and live like Cinderella to be happy. Cinderella portrays, "Happiness means getting a man." These cartoons also display many negative aspects such as racism. In every cartoon love story, the princess is always white. One student mentioned, "I'm not taking my kids to see any Walt Disney movies until they have a black woman playing the leading role." Racism can also be found with the Indians in "looney tunes."
This cartoon fails the properly understand the Indian culture. In can be seen as being made fun of. This reminds me of the NFL mascot debate.

This debate is a major problem in the NFL. The NFL redskins mascot is an Indian. This is disrespectful to Native Americans because their culture is worth more than just a mascot. In addition, this culture is disrespected by many of the fans. For the games, many fans dress as Indians not knowing they are disrespecting the Indian culture. I feel like most of the fans don't do this on purpose. However, I can see how it would be offensive to Native Americans. I attached a link to the NCIA or National Congress of American Indians website. Once on the website, you will see a two-minute video that shows that "Indians" are more than what people may think they are. There are many different tribes and positive historical figures mentioned in the video.
Point to Share: if someone unknowingly disrespected your culture how would you address the problem to them? Would you be mad or figure they just didn't know.

Really love your connection. I would like to add on to NFL redskins situation. I think a lot of people who appropriate the Indian culture in this situation are made aware in some way or another that they are being disrespectful but there is a notion of white ownership that persists strongly that white people can and should take over everything. And in general when they are told they don’t own something or they are not allowed to do something because it doesnt belong to them, it offends them and creates the energy to continue to do it because very few times in their life are they told that they can’t do something, and their history is all about being superior to everyone else so why would they stop now?
ReplyDeleteI like how you made your connection to the Indian culture, instead of only the Disney princesses, because the issue isn't always women being saved by men. But a big issue is racism, which often gets overlooked.
ReplyDeleteThe Images you chose to represent your blogs were great choices. I didn't even remember that BugsBunny portrayed their Indian characters as tomatoes. As a kid i never would have even noticed that let alone seen a problem with it.
